Most tourists, when exploring the city, cannot resist seeing the beautiful panorama view of the entire city. There are several places in Wrocław from which you can admire the city from a bird’s eye view, one of them is the Sky Tower, the tallest building in Poland. The Sky Tower has an observation deck on the 50th floor. The place is often visited by tourists, so when planning a trip, it is good to think about booking tickets in advance.

Sky Tower is the tallest building in Poland in two categories:

– “height to the roof”

– “height from the highest floor”.

The height of the building at the highest point (tower) is 212 m and has 51 floors.

Location - Sky Tower

While in Wrocław, it is hard not to notice Sky Tower, it is the tallest building in Poland. Since it is located close to the center, it is a great landmark. You can see it from a distance of 30 km from the city. The city of Wrocław is dominated by low-rise buildings, most of the buildings have 4 floors, so building such a majestic building in the city center was a huge undertaking.

Location

Sky Tower is located in the Krzyki district of Wrocław, at the intersection of Powstańców Śląskich and Happy Streets.

The building is located in the vicinity of:

railway and bus station – approx. 10 minutes on foot
Wroclaw Market Square – approx. 20 minutes on foot
airport – approx. 25 minutes by car.

Sky Tower how to get there

The building can be reached by various means of transport.

by trams (stop “Wielka”): 2, 6, 7, 14, 17, 20, 24,
by buses: A, D, 125, 325, 144.

Parking

There is an underground car park in the basement of the Sky Tower, but the prices are quite high there. People who want to save on parking are recommended to park near the neighboring streets, free of charge. You can easily find a parking space there

Sky Tower Run

SKY TOWER RUN

The Sky Tower run has been held every year since 2014. However, for 4 years it has the rank of the Polish Championship in tower running. Competitors start from street level and run to the finish line at the vantage point on the 49th floor. There are 1142 stairs to climb.
Polish Firefighters Championships in the run up the stairs

In addition to the usual running up the stairs, there is also a run for firefighters. They run in sports clothes and a combat uniform and cover the same distance (1142 stairs) as the Sky Tower Run competitors.

What was before

Sky tower is not the first skyscraper in this place, there was an office building under the management of the same company LC Corp before. Poltegor was once the tallest building in Wrocław. The skyscraper was built in 1982.

Sky-Tower-Poltegor

The skyscraper and the almost 3-hectare plot surrounding it were bought on January 18, 2006 for (according to unofficial information) EUR 17.5 million by a Wrocław businessman Leszek Czarnecki. In the spring of 2006, earthworks in the surroundings of “Poltegor” began, preparing the site for the construction of a new facility. Poltegor was destroyed. An interesting fact is that during the destruction of the building, a training action was carried out for firefighters. The name Poltegor was derived from the name of the company that owned it,  Polskie Techniki Górnicze

Construction and Great Changes

the investment started in August 2007, then the investor obtained a building permit. It lasted 6 years and it was only in 2013 that a shopping mall and a tower with an observation deck began to function.

Centuriall-Hall

Centennial Hall why is it worth visiting?

Centennial Hall, why is it worth visiting?

The Centennial Hall is an extraordinary place and a world-class monument. The Centennial Hall has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List due to the unconventional architectural solutions used during the construction. The Centennial Hall attracts tourists not only because of its unique character, but also delights with its beauty. Behind the hall building, there is a picturesque pergola with a wonderful multimedia fountain. (Similar fountains are in Prague, Warsaw and Berlin)

What is known about the Centennial Hall?

The Centennial Hall was designed by Max Berg – the famous architect. The construction lasted from 1911 to 1913, and after the completion of the project, a huge exhibition was created inside to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the defeat of Napoleon at Leipzig. The area around the hall is designated for exhibition and recreation areas. The developing city needed a large, distinctive structure, able to accommodate a large number of exhibitors and visitors.

Access to the Centennial Hall in Wrocław

There are several ways to get to the Centennial Hall. The cheapest is to use public transport. Trams number 2, 4 and 10 stop in front of the Centennial Hall. You can also take a taxi or city bike. We do not recommend bus transport.

There is a paid parking lot near the Centennial Hall. You can enter there from the tourism center. However, the parking lot is extremely expensive, it costs 6,5 PLN / h. Therefore, we recommend using other forms of transport!

Centennial Hall - Sightseeing and Tickets

To visit the Centennial Hall you do not need to buy a ticket, it is widely available to every tourist. However, there are other additional paid attractions nearby, such as the entrance to the terrace from which you can watch the fountain show, as well as fairs and performances, which sometimes take place inside the hall or in the nearby regional tourism center.

Calendar of exhibitions and shows

The Centennial Hall has been planned since its inception as a venue for mass and cultural events, as well as concerts and fairs. It is therefore not surprising that various events take place there several times a year. During this time, entry to the hall, understood as participation in the organized event, is ticketed. Dates of events and ticket prices can be checked on the website of the Centennial Hall!

Hala Stulecia - How was it built?

The establishment of the hall, the most famous work of Wrocław modernism, was associated with the hundredth anniversary of the publication in Wrocław by Frederick William III of the proclamation of March 17, 1813, calling for general resistance against Napoleon. It was decided to celebrate this ceremony with exceptional panache and class, for this purpose a world exhibition was organized to commemorate these events. For this purpose, the city set aside areas located on the edge of the Szczytnicki Park, near the Wrocław Zoological Garden, established some 40 years earlier and enjoying increasing popularity.

Out of 43 submitted projects, the design of the city architect of Wrocław, Max Berg, was approved, who proposed a large exhibition hall with an unprecedented structure. Despite the original, but very controversial design of the hall and the high estimated costs of its construction, on June 28, 1911, it obtained a formal building permit.

At the time of its construction, the hall was a unique facility, with a reinforced concrete cover with the largest span in the world – only a few steel structures were larger then. The hall is 42 meters high and the dome that covers it is 67 meters in diameter. The maximum width of the hall’s interior is 95 meters, and the available space is 14,000 sq m. . In addition to the central hall itself, 56 other exhibition rooms were planned in the building, spacious lobbies surrounding the main hall, and the total was calculated for 10,000 people.

Centennial Hall in Wrocław - UNESCO Monument

In 2006, the Centennial Hall was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which is a unique expression of recognition for this place. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) – the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization was founded on November 16, 1945. This organization was established to protect the world’s top-class monuments or unique natural creations. The sites inscribed on the UNESCO list are monuments unique to all mankind that deserve special protection.

The history of an unusual place

The history of the Centennial Hall is inseparably connected with the history of Wrocław and the entire region. Particularly important events and celebrations took place there, which had an impact on the present character of the city.

The hall survived World War II without any serious losses. The exhibition grounds around the hall and the hall itself for the first time after the war were used on a larger scale from July to September 1948 at the Recovered Territories Exhibition and during the accompanying (August 25-28) World Congress of Intellectuals in Defense of Peace.

Centuriall-Hall
Hala-Stulecia-Cud-UNESCO

The dynamically conducted construction of the Centennial Hall was a great technological undertaking, an example of the highest engineering efficiency and craftsmanship. The applied bold design and organizational solutions became a model for other buildings of this type.

Centennial Hall - Dark Times of the People's Republic of Poland

In the People’s Republic of Poland, no major works were carried out in the hall that would significantly change its character. It served as a venue for concerts and sports events, and the largest cinema in the city also operated in the hall. Only the urban context of the hall changed quite strongly due to the cutting off of the southern part of the exhibition grounds. in 1948 the Spire was built on the square in front of the entrance.

The 90s and the present day

After 1989, some changes were made in the hall, a general renovation lasting several months there in 1997 included such changes as plastic window blinds, advertising boards, sound system, and above all lowering the floor level by about 1 m and building in sliding stands and folding pitches (allows changing the purpose of the hall depending on the current sports or exhibition needs. On May 31, 1997, during his sixth visit to Poland, John Paul II led an ecumenical prayer in the hall as part of the Eucharistic congress.

Last renovation

The renovation of the Centennial Hall was carried out in 2009-2011

The elevation regained its pre-war yellow and sand color. The biggest problem was the replacement of windows. Max Berg in his design used iron mahogany imported especially from Australia. Today, this tree species does not exist, so at the request of the conservator, teak wood was used. This resulted in an increase in renovation costs and an extension of the repair time.

Centennial Hall and Regional Center of Business Tourism

The next stage was the construction of a new Regional Business Tourism Center. The construction in the historic site was possible thanks to the preserved and unrealized expansion plans by Max Berg. The official opening took place on September 17, 2010. The last planned stage was the renovation of the facade inside the building. It was also planned to increase the capacity of the hall for the needs of the audience during sports competitions

In 2014, the volleyball championship was held here.

Despite numerous historical turmoil, the hall has not changed its original character.

The Wrocław Fountain is the largest in Poland and one of the largest in Europe. Its ceremonial opening took place on June 4, 2009, on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the first free elections in post-war Poland. Situated in the picturesque landscape of the Szczytnicki Park, next to the historic Hala Stulecia complex and the Wrocław Congress Center, it attracts the attention of tourists from Poland and abroad. It covers an area of almost 1 ha, and at its bottom there are as many as 800 light points, 300 water nozzles and 3 fire nozzles.

Watching the Fountain Show

The shows between 19 and 21 are most popular due to the upcoming evening. The splash of water, music and the glow of lights shimmering in the glass during the setting sun give the visitors an unforgettable experience. We encourage everyone to watch such a show.

Few people remember that the Centennial Hall was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List along with the adjacent buildings, which are not inferior to their innovative architectural solutions. One of them is the Four Domes Pavilion.

The Four Domes Pavilion is a new branch of the National Museum in Wrocław. The building was erected in 1912 and its author is Hans Poelzig. Until 1945, the pavilion served as a place for exhibitions and occasional exhibitions. From 1953, the building was taken over by the Wrocław Feature Film Studio. In 2006, the Pavilion and the Centennial Hall were entered on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Four Domes Pavilion was donated to the National Museum in Wrocław in 2009.

Panorama of the Battle of Racławice - A work of art

Panorama of the Battle of Racławice in numbers

The Panorama of the Battle of Racławice is a monumental colossus. The building is a painting, around the walls of the building there is a painting that is over 114 meters long and 15 meters high.

The story of how Panorama Racławicka ended up in Wrocław

The Panorama of the Battle of Racławice shows the victorious battle of the Kościuszko Uprisings. This is a special moment in Polish history, because it was during this battle that all Poles from different states (the gentry and the peasants) united to defend their homeland against a common enemy, wanting to stop the partitions of Poland.

Who painted the Panorama of the Battle of Racławice?

Bitwa pod Racławicami was painted by a team of painters. The originator of the creation of the Panorama of the Battle of Racławice was Jan Styka, an artist from Lviv who wanted to celebrate the battle on its 100th anniversary. The artist enlisted many outstanding painters to help. The end result of the work was the establishment of the National Museum in Lviv in 1893.

Not triumph, but cooperation

The aim of painting this monumental work, which is the Panorama of the Battle of Racławice, was not to celebrate the victory of Poles over the invader. The victory was important, but the main goal was to show that the Polish nation can unite in the face of the threat and be successful. Jan Styka, after completing the work on the monumental painting, said about his work as follows:

"When I came up with the idea of doing this work, it was not just about celebrating the triumph of the Polish army, because Poland had greater victories in its history, but I only wanted to show that here all states for the defense of the Fatherland had joined together a hundred years ago, but I wanted splendorimienia najwznioślejszego bohatera wolności, Kościuszki."

Access to the Wroclaw Market sqare

Wroclaw Market Square is a beautiful place, and as everyone knows, beautiful places are not easy to reach, especially by car. Knowing the problems faced by guests visiting Rynek Wrocław, we have prepared for you a list of parking lots near the market in which you can safely leave your car. We recommend using our Batogospot Tumski car park for 25 PLN / day.

If you do not use the full-day parking lot, you can park in one of the side streets. However, when choosing such a solution, it should be remembered that most of them are unidirectional, which creates huge traffic jams. You can lose more time parking than driving to the market. That is why it is good to consider other means of transport.

It is also worth remembering that Wrocław is divided into 3 parking zones, the most expensive is located around the Market Square in Wrocław, but the fees are charged only for parking from Monday to Friday between 8:00 and 18:00. City parking is free on weekends!

Town Hall - Market Square Wrocław

It can be said that the Wrocław Town Hall consists of two buildings. The first is the Old Town Hall in Wroclaw. It is a beautiful Gothic building that is located in the eastern part of the market. The building was built in the late Gothic style. It is known that this building already existed before 1299. Because it is from this period that the first information about its expansion and connection with the New Town Hall comes from the southern side of the market.

The New Town Hall in Wrocław was built at the beginning of the 13th century. Since then, it has been the seat of the city authorities, but the building that we can admire in its present form was only built in the 19th century. Over the centuries, the Town Hall building has been rebuilt several times. An interesting fact is that it has always been connected by an underground corridor with Piwnica Świdnicka – the oldest restaurant in Europe. The town hall is also connected with the cloth hall, formerly a merchant building, now the seat of the Mayor of the City.

Old Town Hall clock tower - Wroclaw Market sqare

A clock tower adjoins the Old Town Hall, which is over 66 m high. It is interesting that the Town Hall tower houses a very old clock. It consists of up to 5 clock dials – 4 dials are located on the tower, the fifth dial was placed on the facade of the Old Town Hall. The clock was designed in such a way that each of the residents could see what time it is, regardless of which side of the city it was on. As you can see, punctuality has always been important for the inhabitants of Wrocław.

Cloth Hall - Wroclaw Market sqare

This is a building where formerly there were chambers of commerce, initially there were 40, but the number increased with time. The first building existed in this place before the Mongol invasion, i.e. in 1241. Cloth, or precious materials, was traded in this house. In the Middle Ages, Wrocław was at the intersection of Via Regia (East-West) and the Amber Route trade routes. Thanks to such a unique location on the Wroclaw market, you could get many exotic goods

Świdnicka Celler - Wroclaw Market Sqere

Few people know that the oldest restaurant in Europe is located in Wroclaw. This is the Świdnicka basement. The restaurant is connected directly to the oldest part of the town hall. In the basement of this building, as early as in the 12th century, there was a storeroom with beer and wine. Beer was transported through a hidden tunnel under the market square directly to the restaurant. Today it is a unique tourist attraction. Being nearby should pay attention to the sculptures on the facade of the building. A drunken husband returning home and waiting for him on the other side of the wife with a raised roller in his hand.

Fredro Monument - Wroclaw Market Square

fredro wroclaw

In the 1950s, Wrocław residents honored the great writer with a monument. However, the monument went there from the ruined Lviv. Earlier, a monument to the Austrian general stood here, which was removed in 1949. There are 2 interesting things connected with the monument. the first is that it is very difficult to meet a writer holding a pen in his hand. It was repeatedly stolen by street jesters. Another curiosity, or rather a tradition, is the Polonez dance for Fredro. Dance is performed by high school graduates and is a kind of superstition, people who take part in it have good results during the secondary school-leaving examination. The Wrocław Market is particularly conducive to such events.

Passing by the Fredro monument it is worth taking a few steps towards the Cloth Hall. This is where the coat of arms of Wrocław is located. It is a must-have place for all trips. It was arranged with different species and shades of granite. It is in Lower Silesia, whose capital is Wrocław, that one of the largest deposits of this material in Europe occurs. This does not affect the appearance of the streets in the city. Standing over the coat of arms, it’s worth remembering its importance for the history of Wrocław

Rynek-wroclaw, herb

In the upper left corner there is a Czech lion in the crown. It reminds of the Czech governments in this city, as well as the location of Wrocław, which is the capital of historic Silesia. The division into Lower and Upper Silesia was introduced artificially only after the end of World War I and the change of borders. Beside the lion, in the upper right corner is the Silesian Eagle. It was borrowed from the Piast dynasty, coat of arms, who were the first to rule this city, their headquarters was located in Ostrów Tumski, in the oldest part of the city.

The letter W in the lower left corner comes from the historical name of the city – Vratislavia. Below we can see the image of John the Evangelist. However, in the central part of the coat of arms is the head of John the Baptist. Patron of the Wroclaw Cathedral and Episcopate, which contributed to the city’s development.

Fountain - Zdrój - Wroclaw Market sqare

The name of the fountain comes from the name of the then president of the city – “Zdrojewski”. It was he who ordered that a fountain be built here. In the Middle Ages there was a city weight in this place. Merchants entering the city who wanted to trade their goods had to pay the appropriate tax to the city council. The weight was used to determine the amount of tax.

One of the local flavors that tell about the city’s history and show how really it is are Wroclaw’s Dwarfs. Where did they come from? There are several theories on this topic, but let’s not delve into history. The fact is that the chancelleries are a unique tourist attraction for Wrocław. The oldest ones are located on the Wroclaw market square. Every important place worth visiting has its own gnome.

A trip in search of gnomes is also a great form of visiting the city with young children, for whom this form of entertainment will make exploring the city boring. Maps with gnomes on the Wroclaw market can be bought at any good Suvenir store, and there are quite a few around the market

Where did the Dwarfs come from on the Wrocław Market Square?

History - Wroclaw Market Square

Tenements around the market square in Wroclaw

There are many historic tenement houses around the Market Square in Wrocław. There are a few special ones that deserve special attention. Tenements are named after decorations on their facades. Because tenements were built at different times, their owners were more or less wealthy, so together they are a beautiful colorful mosaic of different tastes and architectural styles.

Jaś i Małgosia

These are probably the two most famous tenements on the Wroclaw market. One is bigger, the other smaller, just like Hansel and Gretel. Earlier, they were the economic base for altarists, i.e. the guardians of the temple and cemetery in the Garrison church. These are the only surviving buildings of this complex.

Beginnings of administration in Wrocław

As you read earlier in the Middle Ages, at the time when the Market Square was created in Wrocław, there was no administration yet. Tenements around the market square did not yet have addresses, streets were named after places that were there, e.g. Rzeznicza, Więzienna, Kuźnicza, Kurzy Targ. So how were so many tenements managed in one place? Well, nothing simpler with the help of images on the facades. This is where some interesting places came from. Here are the most interesting of them:

  • Under the golden sun
  • jaś and małgosia
  • Under the golden dog
  • Under the Griffins
  • Under the Golden Crown
  • Under golden Maria
  • Under the golden pitcher
  • Under the Golden Eagle
Wroclaw

A beautiful view of tenement houses is ruined by one modernist building designed by Henri Rump. In its glory days it was supposed to present the modernist thought of Wrocław. Today does not encourage view. However, there is a curiosity associated with this building. Inside is the oldest elevator in Poland, which dates from the 19th century.

It is a place that was established in the place of medieval potters’ stalls. For many years the place did not have its name, it was given only by the Polish administration in 1948. One of the tenement houses houses the Prose literary club. It is a meeting place for Wrocław writers.

It used to be a separate square, today it is part of the complex that is Rynek Wrocław. The square got its name from the fact that in the Middle Ages salt was traded there, which was very expensive and desirable at that time. Today they trade flowers there. This is the only place in Wroclaw, and maybe even in Poland, where you can buy Flowers at any time of the day or night. It is also a great opportunity to take your chosen heart to this place. It is interesting that under the square there is an atomic shelter, which has recently been arranged as a museum of world cinema.

And the punishment of public flogging at the end of the nineteenth century, so relatively recently. Cheaters and criminals were brought to the pillory to show them to the whole city. The one standing in Wrocław is a copy of the Pillory from 1492. It is made of sandstone, by the famous Saxon sculptor Preussey

The sculpture did not appear on the Wrocław market square until the beginning of the 20th century. Its author is the Berlin sculptor Ernst Moritz. One and a half meter sculpture near the town hall is slightly over 150 cm tall and weighs over 300 kg. It was the first fountain on the Wrocław market. There are many legends around the bear cub where it came from on the Market Square in Wroclaw, one thing is certain, it is a unique Tourist attraction that you must see.

2. Centennial Hall and fountain show - weekend in Wroclaw

Being for a weekend in Wroclaw, you may come here by accident, because it is a place where many cultural and sporting events take place. The hall can seat up to 10,000 people. It was built in 1913, it is also known as Hala Ludowa. In 2006, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There is a fountain in front of Hala Stulecia. Inhabitants come here to rest during the summer. The fountain shows last almost all day, and we suggest going there in the evening for a special show, where there is a much larger show. After a day of sightseeing, it is the perfect solution to sit back, relax and enjoy the show. This is a great spectacle that cannot be missed while on a weekend in Wroclaw.

The Centennial Hall was designed by Max Berg – a famous architect. Construction lasted in the years 1911-1913, and after the project was completed inside, a huge exhibition was created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the defeat of Napoleon near Leipzig. Around the hall, the area is intended for exhibition and recreation areas. The developing city needed a large, characteristic structure capable of housing a significant number of exhibitors and visitors.

The work of Wroclaw Modernism

The creation of the hall, the most famous work of Wrocław modernism, was associated with the centenary of the release in Wroclaw by Frederick William III of the March 17, 1813 call calling for general resistance against Napoleon. This ceremony was decided to celebrate with exceptional momentum and class. To this end, a world exhibition was organized to commemorate these events. For this purpose, the city has developed areas located on the edge of the Szczytnicki Park, close to the Zoological Garden founded about 40 years earlier and enjoying the growing popularity. From among 43 submitted projects, the design of the Wrocław city architect, Max Berg, was accepted, who proposed a huge exhibition hall of unprecedented design. Despite the original but very controversial design of the hall and the high estimated costs of its construction, on June 28, 1911 he obtained a formal building permit.

A colossus tailored to his time

At the time of construction, the hall was an exceptional object, having the reinforced concrete covering with the largest span in the world – only a few steel constructions reached larger sizes at that time. The hall is 42 m high and the dome covering it is 67 m in diameter. The maximum width of the interior of the hall is 95 meters, and the available area is 14.0 thousand. . In addition to the central hall in the building, 56 other exhibition rooms are planned, spacious lobbies encircling the main hall, and the whole was calculated at 10,000 people.

In 2006, Hala Stulecia was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which is a unique tribute to this place. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) – The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization was founded on November 16, 1945. This organization was established to protect the world’s largest class monuments or unique creations of nature. The objects inscribed on the UNESCO list are monuments that are unique to all humanity and deserve special protection.

The dynamic construction of Hala Stulecia was a great technological undertaking, an example of the highest engineering skill and craft proficiency. The bold structural and organizational solutions used have become a model for other buildings of this type.

The history of Hala Stulecia is inseparably connected with the history of Wrocław and the whole region. When visiting Wrocław for the weekend, it’s worth taking a look. Particularly important events and celebrations took place there, which had an impact on the current nature of the city.

The hall survived World War II without major losses. The exhibition grounds around the hall and it itself was used for the first time after the war on a larger scale from July to September 1948 at the Exhibition of Regained Territories and during the World Congress of Intellectuals in Peace Defense (August 25-28).

In the People’s Republic of Poland, no major works were carried out that would significantly change its character. . It served as a place for concerts, sporting events, and the largest cinema in the city operated in the hall. Only the urban context of the hall has changed quite significantly, by cutting off the southern part of the exhibition grounds. in 1948 a Spire was built in the square in front of the entrance.

1990s and the present day

After 1989, some changes were made in the hall, the general renovation there lasting several months in 1997 included such changes as plastic window blinds, notice boards, sound system, and above all lowering the floor level by about 1 m and building sliding stands and folding pitches (enables changing the purpose of the hall depending on current sports or exhibition needs. On May 31, 1997, during his sixth visit to Poland, John Paul II led an ecumenical prayer in the hall as part of the Eucharistic congress.

Last renovation

Renovation of Hala Stulecia was carried out in the years 2009-2011

The façade regained its pre-war yellow-sand color. Replacing the windows turned out to be the biggest problem. Max Berg used iron mahogany imported specifically from Australia in his project. Today, this species of tree is absent, so at the request of the conservator of monuments, teak tree was used. This resulted in increased repair costs and extended repair time.

Last Decade - weekend in Wroclaw

The next stage was the construction of a new Regional Business Tourism Center. The construction in the historic site was possible thanks to the preserved and unrealized expansion plans by Max Berg. The official opening took place on September 17, 2010. The last planned stage was the renovation of the facade inside the building. It was also planned to increase the capacity of the hall for the audience during sports competitions
In 2014 volleyball championships were held here.
Despite numerous historical turmoil, the hall did not change its original character.

Other attractions that are worth visiting while spending a weekend in Wroclaw are the Japanese Garden and Szczytnicki Park. Hala Stulecia was planned as an exhibition facility. It is hard, therefore, not to be surrounded by extensive green areas, which often serve as a base for various types of exhibitions or cultural events. a significant part of these green areas is the Szczytnicki Park, which is the most beautiful park in Wrocław.

The biggest advantage of this place is the huge area, over 100 ha. In addition, housing estates surrounding the park are characterized by low terraced buildings, which promotes closeness to nature. Being in the Park you can forget that you are in the city.

Biodiversity is another undoubted advantage of this place. Over 350 species of various trees from Europe, Asia and America grow in Sczytnicki Park. Over 70 different animal species also live here, including foxes, martens and amazing bird species. this place is an important ecosystem for Wrocław.

Several hundred years earlier, the village of Szczytniki existed here, hence the name of the Park.
The park was initially maintained in the English style. This continued until Napoleon’s invasion in 1806, when the park was severely damaged and required reconstruction.

From 1833, the park was systematically expanded. Recreation infrastructure was created, including a horse racing track. However, we owe the present appearance of the park to Peter Joseph Lenne.

Water printer in Hydropolis

Muzeum-we-wrocławiu

Even before entering Hydropolis we can admire its multimedia character. The building’s facade is created by a multimedia water printer with a surprising length of 46.5 m. Thanks to the latest technologies, we can admire various inscriptions and patterns printed on water for a few seconds. This is an additional attraction for tourists waiting for purchase tickets.

The exhibition is divided into 8 thematic zones, each of which addresses different topics related to the use of water. As many as 64 devices were used to create the multimedia exhibition. The first of these halls is the “Water planet”. The exhibitions present various water-related curiosities. Below we describe the most interesting rooms.

Water planet

Visiting the first room called “Water Planet” we can learn theories about the origin of water in the Universe, the creation of our planet and other planets on which there is water with a structure different to ours. The room in which this exhibition is presented contains many multimedia screens installed, thanks to which you can read interesting facts related to the creation of water in the Universe.

Ocean depth survey

hydropolis-bilety

Entering this room, for sure, our attention will be drawn to the Trisste Batyskaf capsule from 1960. It was the first submarine that two explorers dived into the deepest abyss of our planet, namely the Marian Trench. The Marian Trench is the deepest tectonic trench on our planet, it has a depth of almost 11 thousand. meters below sea level. The Marian Trench is located in the southwestern part of the Pacific Ocean. It was created as a result of separation of two tectonic plates: Pacific and Philippine. one of the two Batyskaf passengers was Don Walsh, an American explorer, oceanographer and officer. Walsh visited Hydropolis a few years ago and took his place again in Batyskaf. The hero of this expedition was awarded the title of honorary ambassador of knowledge about water.

Water Residents

The neighboring room presents animals living in the seas and oceans. The diversity of animal species contrasted at the exhibition delights visitors. You can find sharks several meters, huge schools of fish and microorganisms there.

One of the exhibition rooms houses a variety of ship models, from the beginning of sailing to modern container ships. Watching this exhibition, you can admire how the history of shipping has developed over the years. The exhibition also includes exhibits showing the history of water engineering, such as sluices, water pumps, steam machines and even an Archimedes water screw.

Relax zone in Hydropolis Wroclaw

hydropolis wroclaw

One of these attractions is the relaxation zone, it is a place where we can take a short break during sightseeing and relax listening to the sound of the waves on a specially prepared sunbed. Interesting is the decoration of the walls in this room. The arrangement was created from a composition of lichens (i.e. organisms that are a combination of algae and protist). The arrangement is to symbolize the forests of the Amazon rainforest, which are called the lungs of the planet and function thanks to the dynamic circulation of water in nature.

Other Exhibitions

Hydropolis houses many other interesting exhibitions devoted to the role of water in shaping exotic cultures and religions, mn. Ancient egypt You can also admire exhibitions related to the role of water in the human body and the processes taking place in it with their participation. An interesting issue that we can learn about reading multimedia boards is the phenomenon of bioluminescence and life forms inhabiting hydrothermal ecosystems. In which the temperature reaches up to 400 degrees Celsius.

From the 19th century, municipal water supplies have been collecting water around ul. On the dike. Initially, drinking water was taken directly from the river, then it was passed through coal and sand filters. However, at the beginning of the 20th century this proved to be an ineffective solution. The collected river water had too high concentration of iron and chlorine compounds. The current filters were exploited to the limit, and yet the city was still suffering from water scarcity. To sum up, it was necessary to expand the treatment plant system. It was decided to build more buildings for the water treatment plant. At that time, the river intake was abandoned and a new groundwater intake system was created. The tank functioned continuously until 1945, when a Soviet bomb fell on the roof of the main tanks. Shortly after the end of hostilities, the tanks were rebuilt and again supplied water to the city.

How Hydropolis was created?

Another breakthrough in the history of the sewage treatment plant was 2002, when renovation work was started. Then, after the renovation of the buildings, the oldest of them was entered into the register of monuments and a decision was made to create an interactive museum under the management of municipal waterworks. The museum has been operating since 2014. and is still developing. Is one of the biggest attractions of Wroclaw.

Wroclaw Zoo open after a break

Quite recently, on May 21, the ZOO Wroclaw has been reopened to visitors. The reason for the closure of the zoo for tourism was the epidemic threat of the covid-19 virus. The zoo did not receive visitors for over 2 months, but during the epidemic a number of development works were carried out, the effects of which can be seen today.

The situation of the zoo, and covid-19

Due to the state of epidemiological threat, the Wroclaw Zoo was closed for almost 2 months. However, this time was actively used and intended for the development of the object. The Wrocław Zoo has made investments related to conducting development works, including the extension and renovation of some animal enclosures, conducting promotional activities in social media and increasing the offer for visitors by introducing new species of animals. During the epidemic, it was possible to buy a prepaid ticket for future use. During the epidemic, the zoo broadcast live life of various species. They are available on Facebook funpage. The promotional action is called #domowezoo

Sightseeing, but safe

The zoo has been opened but visitors are advised to exercise extreme caution. The zoo in Wroclaw recommends using a few tips that will increase the feeling of comfort and safety for visitors. Here are the most important of them;

  • Some pavilions are still closed to tourist traffic due to the small space for visitors and the prevailing warm and humid climatic conditions in some facilities
  • It is recommended to buy tickets online to avoid contacting zoo staff and waiting in queues
  • The zoo is open only from 9:00 to 18:00
  • The zoo’s regulations have also been changed
  • Holders of unused vouchers and annual passes during the epidemic have been extended by 72 days

Something extra that you have never seen!

The Wroclaw zoo was closed during quarantine, but this does not mean that life inside the zoo has stopped. During this time new, rare animals appeared. Most of them were born during quarantine.

The most interesting specimens include:

Takin Złoty – an extremely rare species that actually does not occur in the wild. Only 13 zoos in Europe run his breeding, including the Zoo  Wroclaw since 2017. It is a huge breeding success and an important activity for the protection of endangered species.

Moto bats that came to Wrocław from the Congo Valley in Central Africa. They are extremely rare and quickly became the face of a zoo marketing campaign. They can be found in Africarium, where a special exhibition was created for them.

Souvenirs can be bought at the ZOO Wroclaw

In the zoo there are several places where you can buy souvenirs, there are plenty of them, but a few of them will work best. Here are the most interesting suggestions.

Mascots of exotic animals – they are a great souvenir, especially for the youngest visitors

Souvenir medals – they can be purchased in special vending machines located near the biggest attractions of the ZOO. Such a souvenir will satisfy more than one numismatist. The price of a single medal is PLN 10.

Greeting cards – This is an interesting and unique form of souvenir, it is also the oldest gadget available in the Wroclaw Zoo, the first cards appeared from the late nineteenth century.

Miniature animal figurines – This is a great gift for zoology enthusiasts. These carefully made figurines perfectly reflect even the most exotic species of animals. They are durable and safe for the environment.

The Zoo Wroclaw has over 150 years of turbulent history behind it. The zoo has developed a lot in recent years. Every year, several new species of animals appear, new investments arise, such as Africarium, Oceanarium, Odrarium or new paddocks for animals. However, not always the Zoological Garden had such a good run.

The history of the ZOO Wroclaw

It all began in 1865, when German Breslau began to develop more dynamically. The city wanted to follow Berlin or Hamburg, which were much more developed. Zoological gardens have been functioning in both of these cities for several years. It was then that a decision was made to build a building for the municipal zoo. The company establishing the zoo initially received 10 ha of area from the city. The dynamic construction of the complex has begun.

Grand opening

At the time of opening the facility, it was inhabited by 160 species of animals. As for those days, it was an impressive number. Along with the development of the zoo, new species of animals came to him. One of the most important events for the Zoological Garden was the importation of a gorilla at the end of the 19th century. This animal was little known at the time and aroused widespread curiosity. Such dependence can be seen even in pop culture, where all the films about “King-Kong” have clearly reflected their inspirations for them come from this period.

Demonstrations of Ethnic Peoples

Shows of ethnic peoples were another important event organized by the ZOO. It was a custom borrowed from English and French culture. which consisted of bringing the indigenous people of Africa and all their belongings to the exhibition. Inhabitants of the Black Continent were to present their everyday life. The largest show of this type took place in 1904, when a group of Bedouins were brought to Breslau. Until today, the record sale of tickets was recorded, which amounted to 41 thousand. people.

Times of war and temporary problems

In the years 1921-1927 the zoo was struggling with serious problems. The deepening economic crisis after losing the First World War forced Breslau at that time to save money. All investments were stopped during this period. The deepening inflation was to the detriment of the garden, and some residents struggled with hunger. Receipts from ticket sales dropped dramatically. This situation forced the owners to close the zoo. The zoo was reopened in 1927 and increased by 3 ha.

Reopening of the ZOO Wroclaw

With the reopening, new animal species began to arrive. There were almost 2000 at that time. The most unique event at that time was the appearance of the extremely rare Manata species. It was the only such animal in all of Europe. The zoo functioned in this form until 1944, when, along with the unfavorable turn of war for the Third Reich, further complications came

ZOO Wroclaw - Formerly the ZOO in Breslau

The Breslau zoo was considered the safest in the Third Reich. Many unique species from the bombed regions were transported to it. For most of World War II, the ZOO functioned well until October 7, 1944, when the first bomb fell on the garden. This event resulted in a wave of tragic consequences. Closing the garden for visitors was their first stage, followed by the liquidation of a significant part of the collection. It should be remembered that in the garden there were then extremely rare species, imported from around the world.

Zoo evacuation and animal slaughter

The liquidation has significantly contributed to the extinction of those at risk. Nobody even considered transport. There was no money for it. In this unpleasant way, ideology once again won an unequal fight with nature. Some of the animals managed to escape and a few months after the Allied forces captured the city, they wandered around the nearby peaknicki park. They were mainly exotic species of birds. Some of them were shot and eaten by the occupying soldiers, but those who survived were caught and ended up in zoos in Krakow, Warsaw and Łódź.

Polish zoo

The reconstruction of the ZOO began in 1948, this time under the banner of People’s Poland. Thanks to the support of professors from the University of Natural Sciences, the ZOO was recognized not only as a place intended for entertainment and tourist attraction, but also as a place for scientific research. Most of the buildings have been thoroughly rebuilt. Attention was turned away from the renovation of the then authorities of the exhibition of recovered lands taking place in Hala Ludowa (now a UNESCO heritage monument) and related preparations. Thanks to this, a large part of the buildings were rebuilt faithfully in relation to the original form and managed to avoid so-common socmodernist buildings made of large panels.

That is why we took care of it all, creating apartments for you dedicated for business travelers. Not only accommodation in Wroclaw is important, but also work comfort. Thanks to the reliable high-speed data connection, you won’t have to worry about getting ready for conferences or other work-related responsibilities

Finally, it is worth mentioning our mission, which is to make everyone who has a place to stay a broad smile on their face after a comfortable night in the apartment.

We have been specializing in renting hotel apartments for over 10 years. This time has enabled us to acquire knowledge that allows us to offer comfortable business accommodation in the best way possible. We meet the expectations of the most demanding guests.

Therefore, we are aware of the importance of professionalism. Choosing the right accommodation can contribute to a positive achievement of the purpose of the trip.

Especially for you - Rent in Wroclaw

We offer comprehensive service, starting from the selection of the right apartment, through customer needs research, to after-sales service and broadly understood consulting. Our service is always there to advise and help. We will organize a taxi for our guests, recommend a tasty restaurant and advise which places in Wroclaw are worth seeing. We are available for our guests around the clock.

Because business relationships with our clients are important to us, we adapt to the needs of invoicing. We propose issuing an invoice for each accommodation service or a collective invoice for a given settlement period. We can also individually adapt to the description of the invoice, the date of issue of the document and other elements that are important to you.

What's more - accommodation in Wrocław

We provide convenient working conditions for you. In each apartment we provide an office table, comfortable chair for work and access to free, fast Internet.
