Most tourists, when exploring the city, cannot resist seeing the beautiful panorama view of the entire city. There are several places in Wrocław from which you can admire the city from a bird’s eye view, one of them is the Sky Tower, the tallest building in Poland. The Sky Tower has an observation deck on the 50th floor. The place is often visited by tourists, so when planning a trip, it is good to think about booking tickets in advance.

Sky Tower is the tallest building in Poland in two categories:

– “height to the roof”

– “height from the highest floor”.

The height of the building at the highest point (tower) is 212 m and has 51 floors.

Sky Tower – a shopping mall – was put into use in the second half of 2012. However, the rest of the building only at the beginning of 2013.

The Sky Tower run has been held every year since 2014. However, for 4 years it has the rank of the Polish Championship in tower running. Competitors start from street level and run to the finish line at the vantage point on the 49th floor. There are 1142 stairs to climb.

In addition to the usual running up the stairs, there is also a run for firefighters. They run in sports clothes and a combat uniform and cover the same distance (1142 stairs) as the Sky Tower Run competitors.

What was before

Sky tower is not the first skyscraper in this place, there was an office building under the management of the same company LC Corp before. Poltegor was once the tallest building in Wrocław. The skyscraper was built in 1982.

The skyscraper and the almost 3-hectare plot surrounding it were bought on January 18, 2006 for (according to unofficial information) EUR 17.5 million by a Wrocław businessman Leszek Czarnecki. An interesting fact is that during the destruction of the building, a training action was carried out for firefighters. The Centennial Hall is an extraordinary place and a world-class monument. The Centennial Hall has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List due to the unconventional architectural solutions used during the construction. What is known about the Centennial Hall?

The Centennial Hall was designed by Max Berg – the famous architect. The construction lasted from 1911 to 1913, and after the completion of the project, a huge exhibition was created inside to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the defeat of Napoleon at Leipzig. The area around the hall is designated for exhibition and recreation areas. The developing city needed a large, distinctive structure, able to accommodate a large number of exhibitors and visitors.

Hala Stulecia - How was it built?

The establishment of the hall, the most famous work of Wrocław modernism, was associated with the hundredth anniversary of the publication in Wrocław by Frederick William III of the proclamation of March 17, 1813, calling for general resistance against Napoleon. It was decided to celebrate this ceremony with exceptional panache and class, for this purpose a world exhibition was organized to commemorate these events. For this purpose, the city set aside areas located on the edge of the Szczytnicki Park, near the Wrocław Zoological Garden, established some 40 years earlier and enjoying increasing popularity.

Out of 43 submitted projects, the design of the city architect of Wrocław, Max Berg, was approved, who proposed a large exhibition hall with an unprecedented structure. Despite the original, but very controversial design of the hall and the high estimated costs of its construction, on June 28, 1911, it obtained a formal building permit.

The Miracle of Architecture - Centennial Hall

At the time of its construction, the hall was a unique facility, with a reinforced concrete cover with the largest span in the world – only a few steel structures were larger then. The hall is 42 meters high and the dome that covers it is 67 meters in diameter. The maximum width of the hall’s interior is 95 meters, and the available space is 14,000 sq m. m². In addition to the central hall itself, 56 other exhibition rooms were planned in the building, spacious lobbies surrounding the main hall, and the total was calculated for 10,000 people.

In 2006, the Centennial Hall was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which is a unique expression of recognition for this place. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) – the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization was founded on November 16, 1945. This organization was established to protect the world’s top-class monuments or unique natural creations. The sites inscribed on the UNESCO list are monuments unique to all mankind that deserve special protection.

The history of an unusual place

The history of the Centennial Hall is inseparably connected with the history of Wrocław and the entire region. Particularly important events and celebrations took place there, which had an impact on the present character of the city.

The hall survived World War II without any serious losses. The exhibition grounds around the hall and the hall itself for the first time after the war were used on a larger scale from July to September 1948 at the Recovered Territories Exhibition and during the accompanying (August 25-28) World Congress of Intellectuals in Defense of Peace.

Bold Architectural Solutions

The dynamically conducted construction of the Centennial Hall was a great technological undertaking, an example of the highest engineering efficiency and craftsmanship. The applied bold design and organizational solutions became a model for other buildings of this type.

Centennial Hall - Dark Times of the People's Republic of Poland

In the People’s Republic of Poland, no major works were carried out in the hall that would significantly change its character. It served as a venue for concerts and sports events, and the largest cinema in the city also operated in the hall. Only the urban context of the hall changed quite strongly due to the cutting off of the southern part of the exhibition grounds. in 1948 the Spire was built on the square in front of the entrance.

The 90s and the present day

After 1989, some changes were made in the hall, a general renovation lasting several months there in 1997 included such changes as plastic window blinds, advertising boards, sound system, and above all lowering the floor level by about 1 m and building in sliding stands and folding pitches (allows changing the purpose of the hall depending on the current sports or exhibition needs.On May 31, 1997, during his sixth visit to Poland, John Paul II led an ecumenical prayer in the hall as part of the Eucharistic congress.

Last renovation

The renovation of the Centennial Hall was carried out in 2009-2011

The elevation regained its pre-war yellow and sand color. The biggest problem was the replacement of windows. Max Berg in his design used iron mahogany imported especially from Australia. Today, this tree species does not exist, so at the request of the conservator, teak wood was used. This resulted in an increase in renovation costs and an extension of the repair time.

Centennial Hall and Regional Center of Business Tourism

The next stage was the construction of a new Regional Business Tourism Center. The construction in the historic site was possible thanks to the preserved and unrealized expansion plans by Max Berg. The official opening took place on September 17, 2010. The last planned stage was the renovation of the facade inside the building. It was also planned to increase the capacity of the hall for the needs of the audience during sports competitions

In 2014, the volleyball championship was held here.

Despite numerous historical turmoil, the hall has not changed its original character.

Centennial Hall and Fountain Show

The Wrocław Fountain is the largest in Poland and one of the largest in Europe. Its ceremonial opening took place on June 4, 2009, on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the first free elections in post-war Poland. Situated in the picturesque landscape of the Szczytnicki Park, next to the historic Hala Stulecia complex and the Wrocław Congress Center, it attracts the attention of tourists from Poland and abroad. It covers an area of almost 1 ha, and at its bottom there are as many as 800 light points, 300 water nozzles and 3 fire nozzles.

Four domes pavilion

Few people remember that the Centennial Hall was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List along with the adjacent buildings, which are not inferior to their innovative architectural solutions. One of them is the Four Domes Pavilion.

The Four Domes Pavilion is a new branch of the National Museum in Wrocław. The building was erected in 1912 and its author is Hans Poelzig. Until 1945, the pavilion served as a place for exhibitions and occasional exhibitions. From 1953, the building was taken over by the Wrocław Feature Film Studio. In 2006, the Pavilion and the Centennial Hall were entered on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Four Domes Pavilion was donated to the National Museum in Wrocław in 2009.

The story of how Panorama Racławicka ended up in Wrocław

The Panorama of the Battle of Racławice shows the victorious battle of the Kościuszko Uprisings. This is a special moment in Polish history, because it was during this battle that all Poles from different states (the gentry and the peasants) united to defend their homeland against a common enemy, wanting to stop the partitions of Poland.

Who painted the Panorama of the Battle of Racławice?

The originator of the creation of the Panorama of the Battle of Racławice was Jan Styka, an artist from Lviv who wanted to celebrate the battle on its 100th anniversary. The artist enlisted many outstanding painters to help. The end result of the work was the establishment of the National Museum in Lviv in 1893.

Not triumph, but cooperation

The aim of painting this monumental work, which is the Panorama of the Battle of Racławice, was not to celebrate the victory of Poles over the invader. The victory was important, but the main goal was to show that the Polish nation can unite in the face of the threat and be successful. Jan Styka, after completing the work on the monumental painting, said about his work as follows:

"When I came up with the idea of doing this work, it was not just about celebrating the triumph of the Polish army, because Poland had greater victories in its history, but I only wanted to show that here all states for the defense of the Fatherland had joined together a hundred years ago, but I wanted splendorimienia najwznioślejszego bohatera wolności, Kościuszki."

Main exhibition

The Panorama of the Battle of Racławice is a unique museum, the most famous exhibition that is presented there is a painting by Jan Styka and Wojciech Kossak, presenting the panorama of the Battle of Racławice. It is not the only exhibition at this museum. After the screening, the main exhibition also features exhibits from the battles of the Kościuszko Uprising, models of minor battles of the Uprising, and even an exhibition of bookplates. All exhibitions, although less spectacular, are included in the ticket price.

The time of visiting the Panorama of the Battle of Racławice is 30 minutes. This is how long the screening in the main painting room lasts. Due to the great interest in visiting this place, it is not possible to stay for the next screenings. While visiting the small rotunda, i.e. a specially built-on room, you can admire the exhibits that reflect the historical aspects of the battle.

In the central part of the rotunda, a plastic map of the area is presented, repeating the topographic layout of the area where the Battle of Racławice took place. Colored LEDs indicate the positions and movements of the troops fighting in the battle – Polish troops (yellow diodes) and Russian troops (green diodes). The course of the battle, based on historical sources, is presented in a commentary read by a lecturer (in six languages: Polish, English, German, Russian, French, Spanish), additionally enlivened by appropriately lit parts of colored LEDs. Historical information contained in the commentary can be confronted with the artistic vision of Kossak and Styka.

In the display cases on the edge of the rotunda there is an exhibition entitled “Colors and weapons of the troops fighting at Racławice on April 4, 1794”. It presents 107 figurines showing Polish and Russian soldiers in period uniforms.
In the showcases of the Little Rotunda vestibule, there are also sketches painted by Jan Styka and Wojciech Kossak in the Racławice Fields in April 1893 and a painted poster design for the Panorama in Lviv from 1894.

In four annexes separated by semicircular bends on the southern wall and a variable floor level, you can see multimedia presentations extending our knowledge about the Panorama of the Battle of Racławice, its creators and fate, details of conservation and other European panoramas.

The first annex (in front of the entrance) – a spatial map with the marked combat route of the Kościuszko Uprising from Krakow through Racławice, Szczekociny, Połaniec, Warsaw to Maciejowice.

Annex two – presentations about other Polish panoramas, European panoramas and the creators of the Panorama of the Battle of Racławice (in Polish) are presented on the monitor.

2019 is the 225th anniversary of the Kościuszko Uprising and the 125th anniversary of the “Panorama of the Battle of Racławice”. On this occasion, the exhibition “Tadeusz Kościuszko in Phaleristics” will be presented in the hall of the Museum, which is part of the collection “Kościuszko Iconography” by Krzysztof Lachowicz, a famous Wrocław collector, owner of the largest collection of Kościuszkoans in Poland.

Over 650 badges, medals, tokens, plaques, pendants and other honorary and commemorative signs will be presented. Exhibits from the times of the partitions and the 20th century, as well as news from Poland, as well as from Australia, Belarus, France, Switzerland and the USA, will be displayed. These are signs of a patriotic, military, organizational, educational, company, sports and tourist character. They commemorate the hero of the Panorama of the Battle of Racławice – General Tadeusz Kościuszko. He became well-established in the nation’s consciousness as the first leader in the history of the uprising, who made Poles engage in armed acts, indicating that fighting is the only way to regain independence.
In Kościuszko iconography, phaleristics is a significant section presenting the traditions of commemorating the person and activity of Tadeusz Kościuszko.

Town Hall - Market Square Wrocław

It can be said that the Wrocław Town Hall consists of two buildings. The first is the Old Town Hall in Wroclaw. It is a beautiful Gothic building that is located in the eastern part of the market. Some history

The Centennial Hall was designed by Max Berg – a famous architect. Construction lasted in the years 1911-1913, and after the project was completed inside, a huge exhibition was created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the defeat of Napoleon near Leipzig. Around the hall, the area is intended for exhibition and recreation areas. The developing city needed a large, characteristic structure capable of housing a significant number of exhibitors and visitors.

The work of Wroclaw Modernism

The creation of the hall, the most famous work of Wrocław modernism, was associated with the centenary of the release in Wroclaw by Frederick William III of the March 17, 1813 call calling for general resistance against Napoleon. This ceremony was decided to celebrate with exceptional momentum and class. To this end, a world exhibition was organized to commemorate these events. For this purpose, the city has developed areas located on the edge of the Szczytnicki Park, close to the Zoological Garden founded about 40 years earlier and enjoying the growing popularity. From among 43 submitted projects, the design of the Wrocław city architect, Max Berg, was accepted, who proposed a huge exhibition hall of unprecedented design. Despite the original but very controversial design of the hall and the high estimated costs of its construction, on June 28, 1911 he obtained a formal building permit.

A colossus tailored to his time

At the time of construction, the hall was an exceptional object, having the reinforced concrete covering with the largest span in the world – only a few steel constructions reached larger sizes at that time. The hall is 42 m high and the dome covering it is 67 m in diameter. The maximum width of the interior of the hall is 95 meters, and the available area is 14.0 thousand. m². In addition to the central hall in the building, 56 other exhibition rooms are planned, spacious lobbies encircling the main hall, and the whole was calculated at 10,000 people.

UNESCO monument

In 2006, Hala Stulecia was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which is a unique tribute to this place. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) – The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization was founded on November 16, 1945. This organization was established to protect the world’s largest class monuments or unique creations of nature. Centennial Hall and the city's history - weekend in Wroclaw

The history of Hala Stulecia is inseparably connected with the history of Wrocław and the whole region. When visiting Wrocław for the weekend, it’s worth taking a look. Particularly important events and celebrations took place there, which had an impact on the current nature of the city.

The hall survived World War II without major losses. The exhibition grounds around the hall and it itself was used for the first time after the war on a larger scale from July to September 1948 at the Exhibition of Regained Territories and during the World Congress of Intellectuals in Peace Defense (August 25-28).

In the People’s Republic of Poland, no major works were carried out that would significantly change its character. . It served as a place for concerts, sporting events, and the largest cinema in the city operated in the hall. Only the urban context of the hall has changed quite significantly, by cutting off the southern part of the exhibition grounds. in 1948 a Spire was built in the square in front of the entrance.

1990s and the present day

After 1989, some changes were made in the hall, the general renovation there lasting several months in 1997 included such changes as plastic window blinds, notice boards, sound system, and above all lowering the floor level by about 1 m and building sliding stands and folding pitches (enables changing the purpose of the hall depending on current sports or exhibition needs.On May 31, 1997, during his sixth visit to Poland, John Paul II led an ecumenical prayer in the hall as part of the Eucharistic congress.

Last renovation

Renovation of Hala Stulecia was carried out in the years 2009-2011

The façade regained its pre-war yellow-sand color. Replacing the windows turned out to be the biggest problem. Max Berg used iron mahogany imported specifically from Australia in his project. Today, this species of tree is absent, so at the request of the conservator of monuments, teak tree was used. This resulted in increased repair costs and extended repair time.

Last Decade - weekend in Wroclaw

The next stage was the construction of a new Regional Business Tourism Center. The construction in the historic site was possible thanks to the preserved and unrealized expansion plans by Max Berg. The official opening took place on September 17, 2010. The last planned stage was the renovation of the facade inside the building. The history of Szczytnicki Park - weekend in Wroclaw

Parkpennicki is a perfect place for a walk, you should visit it when visiting Wroclaw for the weekend. The park was created on the orders of the municipal garrison commander stationed in Wrocław – L. The Archdiocesan Museum is the oldest museum facility in Wroclaw. The museum has numerous souvenirs of sacred art, half a thousand books, about six thousand monuments mainly from Romanesque and Gothic art. The exhibition is divided into 8 thematic zones, each of which addresses different topics related to the use of water. As many as 64 devices were used to create the multimedia exhibition. The first of these halls is the “Water planet”. The exhibitions present various water-related curiosities. Below we describe the most interesting rooms.

Water planet

Visiting the first room called “Water Planet” we can learn theories about the origin of water in the Universe, the creation of our planet and other planets on which there is water with a structure different to ours. The room in which this exhibition is presented contains many multimedia screens installed, thanks to which you can read interesting facts related to the creation of water in the Universe.

Ocean depth survey

Entering this room, for sure, our attention will be drawn to the Trisste Batyskaf capsule from 1960. It was the first submarine that two explorers dived into the deepest abyss of our planet, namely the Marian Trench. The Marian Trench is the deepest tectonic trench on our planet, it has a depth of almost 11 thousand. meters below sea level. The Marian Trench is located in the southwestern part of the Pacific Ocean. It was created as a result of separation of two tectonic plates: Pacific and Philippine. one of the two Batyskaf passengers was Don Walsh, an American explorer, oceanographer and officer. Walsh visited Hydropolis a few years ago and took his place again in Batyskaf. The hero of this expedition was awarded the title of honorary ambassador of knowledge about water.

The neighboring room presents animals living in the seas and oceans. The diversity of animal species contrasted at the exhibition delights visitors. You can find sharks several meters, huge schools of fish and microorganisms there.

Short story of Hydropolis Wroclaw

From the 19th century, municipal water supplies have been collecting water around ul. On the dike. Initially, drinking water was taken directly from the river, then it was passed through coal and sand filters. However, at the beginning of the 20th century this proved to be an ineffective solution. The collected river water had too high concentration of iron and chlorine compounds. The current filters were exploited to the limit, and yet the city was still suffering from water scarcity. To sum up, it was necessary to expand the treatment plant system. It was decided to build more buildings for the water treatment plant. At that time, the river intake was abandoned and a new groundwater intake system was created. The tank functioned continuously until 1945, when a Soviet bomb fell on the roof of the main tanks. Shortly after the end of hostilities, the tanks were rebuilt and again supplied water to the city.

Another breakthrough in the history of the sewage treatment plant was 2002, when renovation work was started. However, not always the Zoological Garden had such a good run.

The history of the ZOO Wroclaw

It all began in 1865, when German Breslau began to develop more dynamically. The city wanted to follow Berlin or Hamburg, which were much more developed. Zoological gardens have been functioning in both of these cities for several years. It was then that a decision was made to build a building for the municipal zoo. The company establishing the zoo initially received 10 ha of area from the city. The dynamic construction of the complex has begun.

Grand opening

At the time of opening the facility, it was inhabited by 160 species of animals. As for those days, it was an impressive number. Along with the development of the zoo, new species of animals came to him. One of the most important events for the Zoological Garden was the importation of a gorilla at the end of the 19th century. This animal was little known at the time and aroused widespread curiosity. Such dependence can be seen even in pop culture, where all the films about “King-Kong” have clearly reflected their inspirations for them come from this period.

Demonstrations of Ethnic Peoples

Shows of ethnic peoples were another important event organized by the ZOO. It was a custom borrowed from English and French culture. which consisted of bringing the indigenous people of Africa and all their belongings to the exhibition. Inhabitants of the Black Continent were to present their everyday life. The largest show of this type took place in 1904, when a group of Bedouins were brought to Breslau. Until today, the record sale of tickets was recorded, which amounted to 41 thousand. people.

Times of war and temporary problems

In the years 1921-1927 the zoo was struggling with serious problems. The deepening economic crisis after losing the First World War forced Breslau at that time to save money. All investments were stopped during this period. The deepening inflation was to the detriment of the garden, and some residents struggled with hunger. Receipts from ticket sales dropped dramatically. This situation forced the owners to close the zoo. The zoo was reopened in 1927 and increased by 3 ha.

Reopening of the ZOO Wroclaw

With the reopening, new animal species began to arrive. There were almost 2000 at that time. The most unique event at that time was the appearance of the extremely rare Manata species. It was the only such animal in all of Europe. The zoo functioned in this form until 1944, when, along with the unfavorable turn of war for the Third Reich, further complications came

ZOO Wroclaw - Formerly the ZOO in Breslau

The Breslau zoo was considered the safest in the Third Reich. Many unique species from the bombed regions were transported to it. For most of World War II, the ZOO functioned well until October 7, 1944, when the first bomb fell on the garden. This event resulted in a wave of tragic consequences. Closing the garden for visitors was their first stage, followed by the liquidation of a significant part of the collection. It should be remembered that in the garden there were then extremely rare species, imported from around the world.

Zoo evacuation and animal slaughter

The liquidation has significantly contributed to the extinction of those at risk. Nobody even considered transport. There was no money for it. In this unpleasant way, ideology once again won an unequal fight with nature. Some of the animals managed to escape and a few months after the Allied forces captured the city, they wandered around the nearby peaknicki park. They were mainly exotic species of birds. Some of them were shot and eaten by the occupying soldiers, but those who survived were caught and ended up in zoos in Krakow, Warsaw and Łódź.

Polish zoo

The reconstruction of the ZOO began in 1948, this time under the banner of People’s Poland. Thanks to the support of professors from the University of Natural Sciences, the ZOO was recognized not only as a place intended for entertainment and tourist attraction, but also as a place for scientific research. Most of the buildings have been thoroughly rebuilt. Attention was turned away from the renovation of the then authorities of the exhibition of recovered lands taking place in Hala Ludowa (now a UNESCO heritage monument) and related preparations. Thanks to this, a large part of the buildings were rebuilt faithfully in relation to the original form and managed to avoid so-common socmodernist buildings made of large panels.

How to get to the apartment

There are two possible ways to get to the object. One is from Bema Street and the other from Na Szańcach Street. We propose to enter from Bema Street.
Immediately after the restaurant “Greco” turn right (between two tenement houses).

The entrance to the building is from Na Szańce 8D. This is located on the north side of the building. Entering from General Józefa Bema Street you should walk around the housing estate as shown in the picture.
In order to enter the building you need to enter the PIN code.
The PIN for opening the entrance door to the 8D is 07677.
Then wait 2-3 seconds and open the door firmly (the “door open” message will be displayed on the intercom).

When you open the front door and the cage door, go straight ahead. Then turn right, continue to the elevator or take the stairs to apartment number 21 (fifth floor).
When you are at apartment number 21, open the door and enter the apartment.
There are 4 safes behind the door. Open the safe marked 21A.
A pin was sent to the safe by SMS or e-mail after 14:00 as soon as the cleaning service confirms the new PIN to the safe. It should be remembered that when entering the code, the digits should be fully and evenly arranged.
In order to open the safe, one should pull the lever (black element on the left side of entering the digits) opening the door of the safe after entering the code.
There is one key in the safe.
Open the door to the apartment marked 21A using the key drawn from the safe (the key matches the upper and lower locks).
