Taking advantage of the fact that both countries belong to the Schengen zone, you can move freely in the Giant Mountains along both border zones. Perfect places for Mountain Tours
Hostels in the Giant Mountains
There are many shelters in the Karkonosze Mountains, we have listed the most interesting ones. It is worth visiting them for regional delicacies such as pancakes or dumplings with forest blueberries, traditional Polish cuisine or game dishes. In some hostels it is possible to book accommodation, but if you decide to do so during a trip to the mountains, you should do it well in advance due to the regulations on covid-19.
Hostels in the Karkonosze Mountains are divided into two types. The first are shelters that belong to PTTK, the second are other private commercial shelters. The latter type of shelter is, for example, a shelter and a snowball restaurant, and we advise against this type of shelter. The prices are very high there due to the lack of competition and the quality is relatively low. Shelters under the management of PTTK (Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society) have their own atmosphere, they are usually old wooden, several hundred years old houses built in hard-to-reach places on the slopes of the mountains. When we go inside we can smell the wood. Prices in PTTK hostels result from high costs of transporting goods upwards. In some places you have to bring them on your own, in others with quads. When visiting hostels, we recommend trying the local cuisine, it’s an unforgettable experience.
Waterfalls in the Giant Mountains
On the Polish side of the Karkonosze Mountains there are 3 magnificent waterfalls: Szklarki Waterfall, Kamieńczyk Waterfall and Waterfall in Podgórna. These are the three largest waterfalls in Lower Silesia, from a dozen to even thirty meters high. They are located in various parts of the Karkonosze Mountains, so while on a trip in the mountains, it is worth seeing at least one of them. There are many streams and other smaller waterfalls in the Giant Mountains, but they are not as spectacular as these three.

When going on a trip to the mountains, you should take with you a few things that may be useful on the route and perhaps save your life, or at least save a lot of time, effort and frustration, below is a list of useful things on the trail with a brief overview.
How to prepare for trips to the Mountains
Good shoes are essential during a trip to the mountains, remember that you will most likely cover the entire distance on foot, when you are at the top you will not have too many options to shorten the route or give up. Good shoes are essential when hiking in the mountains!
If you are already on the route you need to know which way you want to go. In the Karkonosze Mountains, most of the hiking trails are well marked, you will probably find many markings on trees and information boards that will show you the further route of the trip to the mountains. However, it’s always a good idea to have a charged phone with the navigation app with you. If possible, download the offline map, this way you will save battery consumption. If you have not given up your trip to the mountains yet, you will surely need a comfortable backpack in which you can pack a sweatshirt and something to drink, e.g. a bottle of water. Remember that the weather may change during a several-hour trip to the mountains.
The last thing you should think about is cash. In the tourist hostels you will meet along the way, you will be able to buy a drink and something to eat, but there is no certainty that there will be a card or blick payment terminal. Sometimes in the mountains there is no coverage and then such payment methods do not work, so it is worth having some change with you.
