Relax in Wrocław – walk on Ostrów Tumski

Ostrów Tumski is the oldest, historic part of Wrocław. It is very often visited by the city’s inhabitants. In this part there are many monuments that you can admire while going for a walk during your stay.

Short history

The uprising of Ostrów Tumski dates back to the 10th century. It was inhabited by the Piasts.  From the beginning there were many sacral buildings in this area. In the XI century a cathedral was built. Unfortunately, it was destroyed during the Czech invasion in 1037. The one we admire today was built at the end of the 11th century and it was enlarged in the 16th century. It is one of the oldest sacral buildings in Wroclaw. It is a showcase of Ostrów Tumski.

During the Second World War it was destroyed in 70% and its reconstruction lasted until the 1990s.

What is special?

 Tumski Bridge

This bridge is also called the bridge of lovers. It measures 52 metres high and 6 metres wide. It is located between Ostrów Tumski and Sand Island. It is the first place that leads to the oldest part of Wrocław. In the evening the bridge is climatically illuminated by many gas lanterns, which are lit daily by a lighthouse keeper. The atmosphere is favorable for romantic walks. You can feel the magical atmosphere of this place.

St. Martin’s Church

St. Martin’s Church is located in the area of the former prince’s castle.  Legend has it that Czeslaw Odrowąż prayed in this church to save the town during the Tartar invasion in 1241.

Initially, it was to be a church where masses were to be held in the upper part and the lower part of the building was to be a tomb. Unfortunately, it was an idea that could not be realized, because the second church was built next to it and the work was interrupted.

The church was destroyed many times. After the Second World War the reconstruction of this place took years.

It is worth knowing that by the St. Martin’s Church there is a monument to Pope John XXIII. The monument shows the Pope standing on a pedestal in liturgical robes with his right hand extended in a gesture of blessing. On the pedestal there is an inscription Pacem in terris which means peace on earth. It is the only monument in Poland to this Pope.
