The Centennial Hall is a unique place not only on the map of Wrocław, but also on the whole of Poland, as it is represented by a monument inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is also not the building itself, but the entire complex where we can spend several hours. The main building was built in the years 1911-13 by the architect Max Berg. All lovers of architecture will probably be interested in the fact that at the time of its construction it was a building with the largest diameter – 67 m – with a reinforced concrete cover, and at the same time it could accommodate up to 10,000 people.

Currently, the hall serves entertainment and sports functions and has a year-round exhibition area. In the building next door – the Four Domes Pavilion, we can visit the Museum of Contemporary Art, and we will relax watching a multimedia fountain show and walking under the pergola. If we feel like taking a longer walk, we can visit the Japanese Garden and the Szczytnicki Park.

The highest vantage point in all of Poland – it is located at an altitude of 200 m. This point stands out from the others in the city mainly because it is completely glazed, so we can admire the view of the city regardless of the weather. The Market Hall was built in the years 1906-08 by Richard Pluddemann, built to organize the trade in Wrocław, it serves this function to this day. During the week, you can go here for a little shopping, or to eat dinner or drink delicious coffee. This is a place where fruit is always of the highest quality, even in winter. The structure itself is very interesting – the covering of the Hall, supported in the main nave on reinforced concrete parabolic arches, was an engineering achievement on a global scale.

The Reise complex is a very mysterious place built during World War II, by the Third Reich occupying this area, it is said that the complex was to be Hitler’s headquarters, although there are many other more or less probable legends. We recommend starting your visit to the adit complex from Walim in the Sowie Mountains Landscape Park, so in addition to the adit, you can also go for a walk on the mountain trails.

When choosing this trip, you should be aware that the temperature in the tunnels is low, so despite the middle of summer, it is worth wearing appropriate clothes to make sightseeing pleasant, and the stay in this temperature takes about 60 minutes. During the entire route, we are under the care of a guide, so don’t worry – no one will get lost. The guide will also show us the history of the place and the entire plan of the complex. Here you can choose an audio-guide in a language other than Polish for foreigners.

The complex itself stretches for many kilometers, and a part of it was to be described in another post, Książ Castle, in which underground tunnels were also built. Another entrance worth recommending is the adit in Osówka.

In the vicinity of the drifts described, we can also visit the Grodno castle, located on the Choina mountain, just over an hour from Wrocław. It is a very old structure built by the Silesian Piasts for over 700 years, which is why so many stories about ghosts and other paranormal stories have been accumulated over the centuries. We came back safe, so we think that with a clear conscience we can recommend this attraction not so far from Wrocław. An interesting proposition is also a night tour of the castle, but only for the brave!

The fortress in Srebrna Góra was erected in 1765-77 according to the design of the Prussian engineer W.L. Regler, it was a defensive structure intended to protect Prussian Silesia. The only test it was subjected to was the siege by Napoleon’s army, which was, however, interrupted by the peace agreement in Tylża.

Fair Wroclaw

Fair Wroclaw

The Wroclaw fair is the city's biggest Christmas attraction

Fairs are one of the biggest attractions in Wrocław. They are held several times a year and last several weeks. The most famous fairs in Wrocław include the Christmas market, which takes place every year in December, and the St. John’s Fair in June. If you are going to the capital of Lower Silesia in these months, you must visit the Fair and feel its atmosphere.

Wroclaw fair will it take place?

Many of you are probably wondering about the fate of the Christmas market in Wroclaw. This is such a turbulent topic that in 2020 the restrictions related to the covid-19 pandemic were changing like in a kaleidoscope. Finally, a few weeks before the fifth event, the fair was canceled. Will the approaching St. John’s Fair be the same? This is a question that may change overnight. Up-to-date information can be found on the website of the responsible ministry.

Tourists visiting the capital of Lower Silesia cannot do without visiting the fair. This event has become one of the city’s greatest attractions. Both residents and tourists visiting Wroclaw are eager to take part in it.

You can spend the whole day at the Fair, so it’s good to book accommodation in the center.

Will the Wroclaw Fair take place?
Jarmark-Wroclaw

The tradition of fairs came to Wroclaw from Bavaria, where they had been held for centuries. Some sources say that the tradition of Christmas markets was started by the holidays of the Austrian emperor Albert, who announced the so-called Weihnachtsmarkt, or the trading day before Christmas. Apparently, this holiday was already celebrated in the 13th century.

Wroclaw fairs are among the best in Europe

Although fairs in Europe are very common, and in Germany alone, they are held in over 100 cities. Few of them are as popular as the one organized in Wroclaw

According to the ranking of several recognized publishers, such as the American “The Huffington Post” and the German daily “Die Welt”, the Wroclaw Fair has been recognized as one of the most beautiful in Europe. Thus, it is compared to events such as the 440-year fair in Strasbourg in France, the famous fair in Frankfurt or in Nuremberg. Although the Wrocław Fair has no such long history, it attracts crowds of visitors.

In the ranking of the German daily “Die Welt”, the Wrocław fair was among the 5 best fairs in Europe. Thus appreciating the combination of the original formula with local customs and traditions. This is a very prestigious distinction for Wroclaw.

What can you see at the market?

The original function of the fairs was to create conditions for trade for the city’s residents, today, despite the fact that there are many stalls with local products, decorations or souvenirs related to the city, the greatest attraction of this event is the atmosphere that arises during its organization. Most people visiting the fair just want to feel this atmosphere, see beautiful decorations, try a few delicacies and enjoy the moment. It is an interesting form of walking.

Jarmark-Wroclaw

Baked chestnuts, pancakes and Kürtöskalács are just some of the delicacies available at the fair. Sometimes it’s really hard to deny yourself. While strolling around the fair, you can also meet the delicacies of Old Polish cuisine, such as bigos from a cauldron or a slice of bread with lard. However, before buying such a meal, it is good to think about whether we will get a better meal at a similar price in a restaurant around the corner. We’ll probably get it, but who could visit the market and not try all these delicacies …

Rynek-Wroclaw

A unique attraction of the Wroclaw fair is mulled wine sold every year in a different mug specially designed for this occasion. There are many enthusiasts who come to the fair only to get another mug for their collection.

Tastes of Wroclaw ...

Thanks to certain extremes, the Wrocław fair has also become a topic of jokes in pop culture. One of the reasons was related to the grilled dishes served at one of the stands. Visitors who were tempted by the smell of grilled delicacies had to pay a few hundred zlotys for a small meal. We recommend our guests to visit a luxurious steak restaurant, where we can get much better grilled dishes for a lower price.

Fairs and the inhabitants of Wrocław

The opinions of the inhabitants of Wrocław about fairs are divided, some are die-hard fans, others look at the fairs with a rather unfavorable eye. Events of this type always generate a lot of noise, which is burdensome for people living in tenement houses around the market square. (There aren’t too many people like that anymore) The fairs are held in the very center of the city, despite the fact that it is an area with no traffic. Getting to the other side of the city is difficult due to the crowds of people visiting it.

However, for several years the city authorities have been limiting the number of available positions, as well as setting the rules for the distribution of positions so that they do not block traffic. Most of Wrocław’s inhabitants decide to visit the fair at least once a year.

Topacz Castle – automotive museum top 20 places in Wroclaw

Zamek Topacz is one of the 20 places in Wrocław that are among the most exceptional and unique. When visiting the capital of Lower Silesia, it is worth visiting one of the largest automotive museums in Poland, going for a walk around a picturesque lake or having lunch in a luxurious restaurant. Sounds like an interesting idea for a weekend in Wrocław. Read the article to the end and learn how to plan it.

zamek-topacz

The history of Topacz Castle begins in the Middle Ages, when a fortified tower was built in a town nearby Wrocław, which now serves as a luxury hotel. Legend has it that the fortress was built on the initiative of the Knights Templar, who were stationed in these areas at that time. The fortified tower was surrounded by a 1.7 m thick wall and a moat. Thanks to such preparation, it was an important strategic and defensive point. At the beginning of the 16th century, the tower underwent a thorough reconstruction, an additional storey was added to its top, topped with an attic, with an observation deck. A Renaissance building was also added. Another extension of the complex was carried out in the 18th century. Thanks to it, the tower gained another floor. After that, the entire complex was sold to the confectionery company Rath Schöller & Skene for 300,000. thalers. It was a huge fortune in those days. The castle remained in the hands of the owners of the confectionery company until 1945.

Unfortunately, after the war, the fate of the castle did not go as well as before. A penitentiary was established in the castle, and soon a state-owned farm. in the 1960s an idea emerged to create a hotel with a training center in this place. The plan was implemented, but unfortunately, the careless renovation of the building destroyed many valuable historical details of the Topacz Castle. The renovation was not completed and the Topacz castle in Wrocław was deteriorating for many years.

Automotive Museum - Zamek Topacz

In 2002, the building was bought by the Kurzewski family, who decided to restore the castle to its former glory. However, an expensive renovation would make no sense if the facility was not readily visited by people. This is how the idea of creating an automotive museum and a luxury hotel with a conference center was born. In 2016, the castle underwent another modernization. A luxurious spa complex with a wide range of treatments was created then.

Pearls in the Automotive Museum - Topacz Castle

The topacz castle currently houses the automotive museum, which is one of the largest in Poland. The collection consists of over 200 vintage cars and is still growing. The exhibition is divided into thematic sections. You can admire there, among others:

Treat yourself to wellness treatments at the SPA or enjoy a delicious dinner in a gourmet restaurant.

An interesting fact is that the motorization museum in Topacz Castle runs a vintage car rental for special occasions such as weddings.

The conference center is an ideal place to organize trainings and company workshops.

Zamek Topacz is located in Ślęza, adjacent to Wrocław. The easiest way to get there is via the A4 motorway, heading south and taking the first exit after Wrocław. The journey takes about 15 minutes. You can also get here by suburban transport from the bus station. Then the journey takes about 45 minutes, but it is worth spending this time because it is one of the largest museums in the region

Ostrów Tumski in Wroclaw – apartments for rent

Ostrów Tumski, this is where it all began. It is the oldest and historic part of Wrocław, from which, as legends believe, the present-day capital of Lower Silesia comes from. The first confirmed records of this area come from the year 1000, when a bishopric was established here. The island on which the cathedral is located is the place where the first peoples settled in this area. The choice of the place should come as no surprise to anyone due to the easy access to the river, which provided for the satisfaction of basic life needs. At the beginning, Ostrów Tumski was nothing more than a small wooden settlement with about 1,500 inhabitants. However, when it came under the rule of his grandson, Bolesław Krzywousty, it began to become a brick fortress. It is surrounded by a moat with defensive walls and other elements of the fortifications.

Apartamenty-na-wynajem

Ostrow Tumski - History

Over the next centuries, Ostrów Tumski served mainly as a place of church rituals. Numerous churches, canons’ estates, residences of bishops and other significant church authorities were built here. Throughout this period, Ostrów remained an island that could only be reached by bridges, but in 1824 it became part of the mainland. At that time, one of the branches of the Oder flowing here was buried, which made it possible to join it and end the Ostrów era as an island.

Curiosity!

Before the transformation of Ostrow into a part of the mainland, the canon Jan Baptist Bastiani had his property there, who hosted, among others, the famous Italian lover – Casanova!

waga-wroclaw

The first reports about the main square in Wrocław date back to the 13th century. At the beginning, of course, it was a place of trade, and in the surrounding streets there were factories of various types of craftsmen. Their activity remains a trace to this day in the form of street names. For example, we can walk along Szewska Street, where the most outstanding shoemakers worked centuries ago, or on Białoskórnicza Street, Jatki, where you could buy meat and offal straight from the butcher. After about a hundred years and constant architectural changes, the market in Wrocław took a form that can be seen to this day. It has a rectangular shape and covers an area of 3.8 ha. The layout of the tenement houses and the layout of the streets have been practically untouched, which allows tourists to travel back in time to the 14th century Wrocław.

Unfortunately, the market also has a dark history. It was here that corporal punishment was carried out over the years. Blood was poured over these paving stones after the flogging, the stripping of the convicted limbs or execution by cutting or hanging. In the 1980s, on the site of these tortures, a pillory was erected, where young people meet today, and where the last public execution took place in the middle of the 18th century. Today, however, the market square is the bustling heart of the city, with the best restaurants, numerous pubs and well-preserved tenement houses and monuments.

Africarium number 1 attraction in Europe

The biggest attraction of the Wrocław zoo is the Africanarium. Africarium was created from the combination of two words: Africa and Akwarium. It is a building that combines the best of both places. Since 2012, it has been one of the greatest tourist attractions of Wrocław and Lower Silesia. It is noteworthy that the Africarium is such a unique place that there is no other similar facility in Europe. When visiting Wrocław for the weekend, this place is a must see.

Africarium is one of the objects of the Zoo in Wrocław, it is impossible to visit the Africanarium without entering the Zoo. It is to ZOO Wrocław that you should buy tickets to visit the Africanarium. Visiting this unique object takes from 1 to 3 hours. However, there is no specific limit to the time we can spend in Africa. When visiting this place, you should be well prepared, the temperature in some rooms reaches even 40 degrees, due to exotic animals that need such a warm environment to function. It is good to bring a bottle of water with you.

You can also buy tickets online

As part of the ZOO to rescue, ticket prices have a donation of PLN 1 added to protect endangered animal species. The donation surcharge is voluntary, however, with the default ticket selection, it is automatically added.

It is worth noting that when visiting the Wrocław Zoo, you have the option of purchasing a group ticket. Group tickets are available for groups of at least 15 adults for adults or 10 persons for children. If you wish to visit the Africarium with a guide who will talk about the functioning of the Wrocław Zoo or present interesting facts about the life of animals, this is also possible. The cost of such a tour is an additional ticket to the ticket in the amount of PLN 5 / person in Polish or PLN 20 / person in English

The Wrocław Zoo offers its visitors a package of permanent promotions. Spending a few days in Wrocław, you can plan your visit in such a way that you can take advantage of them. Here are the most interesting promotions:

Family Monday – on Mondays a family ticket (2 + 3) is available for PLN 145

Student Wednesday – on Wednesdays a student ticket is available for PLN 35

Sick Thursday – Retirees and pensioners can buy a reduced ticket for PLN 25

The author of the idea to create such a unique place was Radosław Ratajszczak, president of the ZOO Wrocław company. Its main idea was to present the aquatic ecosystems functioning in the vicinity of the black land. It started with a simple idea and the results are great. However, the project was not without complications – it is the only attraction of this type in Europe.

How was Africarium built?

In 2008, an architectural competition was announced to create a design for this unique place, which is the Africarium. As many as 14 projects were submitted to the competition. There was a lot of competition, but the design by the Wrocław-based ArC2 Design Factory was ultimately won. Construction started and lasted 4 years. Many unconventional architectural solutions were used. It turned out to be particularly difficult to create a special room thermoregulation system. Due to the special living conditions of some species. In some rooms, the temperature reaches 40 degrees. And some animal species need lower temperatures of several degrees.

Finally, after 4 years of construction, the africa board was completed. In 2012, the first tourists were admitted, and this extraordinary place won the hearts of not only Wrocław residents.

What can you see?

The exhibition is divided into several thematic parts. Each part presents the functioning of a different, different ecosystem, and different species of animals live there. Visiting Africa you can feel completely like on the black land. The most-viewed exhibitions include:

Exhibition in africarium

Each exhibit is distinguished by different unique animal species. One can observe how different the ecosystems on this continent can be. Depending on the part of the continent we visit, we can admire different species of animals living in completely different conditions. Such a large number of contrasts can better realize how diverse Africa is. And at the same time how surprising it is.

Red Sea

The Red Sea is an aquarium with a capacity of more than a million liters, artificially created coral reef there. Thanks to the efforts made to create the right conditions for colorful fish inhabiting warm waters. You can meet there as many as 60 different species. The most interesting of them include moray eels and piranhas. Admiring this part of the exhibition you can feel like on vacation in Egypt.

Oceanarium

East Africa

The exhibition depicting East Africa deserves special attention. You can meet here some unusual species such as Nile hippos. Huge ants, or picturesque butterflies. An interesting tourist attraction is the colony of pigeons, unusual rodents. Also worth seeing aquariums with fish from the great African trenches, or drying up lakes. Some species of fish are no longer found in their natural environment.

Mozambique Channel

Mozambique Channel, or 18-meter glass tunnel running along the bottom of the pool allows us to see in a natural environment swimming turtles, stingrays, sharks and other species of fish. Admiring the marine world from the perspective of the ocean floor is a great attraction.

Skeleton Coast

After a walk on the ocean floor, visit the Skeleton Coast, a place where seals and penguins bask on the rocky beach. Looking a little deeper you can spot colorful species of jellyfish, and scary predators such as moray eels.

Congo jungle

Walking along the coast we go straight into the jungle. The exhibition depicting the Congo jungle attracts the attention of all visitors. You can meet there herbivorous mammals called mermaids. They look like dolphins. Predatory crocodiles and numerous species of birds. Attention also attracts a small exhibition of carnivorous plants.

Water printer - Hydropolis Wrocław

Muzeum-we-wrocławiu

Even before entering Hydropolis, we can admire its multimedia character. The facade of the building is created by a multimedia water printer with a surprising length of 46.5 m. Thanks to the latest technologies, we can admire various inscriptions and patterns printed on water for a few seconds. This is an additional attraction for tourists waiting to buy tickets.

The exhibition is divided into 8 thematic zones, each of them dealing with different topics related to the use of water. As many as 64 devices were used to create the multimedia exhibition. The first of these rooms is the “water planet”. The exhibitions present various interesting facts related to water. Below we describe the most interesting rooms.

Planet of Water - Hydropolis Wrocław

Visiting the first room called “Water Planet”, we can learn the theories about the origin of water in the Universe, the formation of our planet and other planets with water with a structure different to ours. The room in which this exhibition is presented includes many multimedia screens that allow you to read interesting facts related to the formation of water in the Universe.

Exploring the depths of the ocean - Hydropolis Wrocław

hydropolis-bilety

Entering this room, our attention will be drawn to the Trieste bathyscaphe capsule from 1960. It was the first submarine which two explorers dived into the deepest abyss of our planet, that is the Marian Trench. The Marian Ditch is the deepest tectonic ditch on our planet, it is almost 11 thousand meters deep. meters below sea level. The Marian Trench is located in the south-west of the Pacific Ocean. It was created as a result of the separation of two tectonic plates: the Pacific and the Philippines. one of the two passengers of the Bathyscaphe was Don Walsh, an American explorer, oceanographer, and officer. Walsh visited Hydropolis a few years ago and took his place in Bathyscaphe again. The hero of this expedition received the title of honorary ambassador of water knowledge.

Inhabitants of waters - Hydropolis Wrocław

In the neighboring room, animals from the seas and oceans are presented. The variety of animal species contrasted at the exhibition amazes the visitors. You can find there sharks several meters high, huge shoals of fish and microorganisms.

One of the exhibition rooms houses a variety of ship models, from the beginnings of shipping to modern container ships. While viewing this exhibition you can admire how the history of shipping has developed over the years. The exhibition also includes exhibits depicting the history of water engineering, such as locks, water pumps, steam engines, and even Archimedes’ water propeller. Man j

Strefa Relaksu - Hydropolis Wrocław

hydropolis wroclaw

One of these attractions is the relaxation zone, a place where we can take a short break while sightseeing and relax listening to the sounds of the sound of the waves on a specially prepared deckchair. An interesting fact is the decoration of the walls in this room. The arrangement was created from the composition of lichens (i.e. organisms that are a combination of algae and protist). The arrangement is to symbolize the Amazon rainforest, which are called the lungs of the planet and function thanks to the dynamic circulation of water in nature.

Other Exhibitions - Hydropolis Wrocław

In Hydropolis there are many other interesting exhibitions devoted to the role of water in shaping exotic cultures and religions, e.g. Ancient Egypt. You can also admire exhibitions related to the role of water in the human body and the processes taking place in it. An interesting issue that we can learn about by reading multimedia tables is the phenomenon of bioluminescence and the forms of life inhabiting hydrothermal ecosystems. Where the temperature reaches even 400 degrees Celsius.

Since the nineteenth century, municipal waterworks have been drawing water in the vicinity of ul. Na Grobli. Initially, drinking water was taken directly from the river, then it was passed through coal and sand filters. However, at the beginning of the 20th century, this turned out to be an ineffective solution. The taken river water had too high a concentration of iron and chlorine compounds. The current filters were operated to the limit, yet the city still suffered from a shortage of water. In summary, it was necessary to expand the sewage treatment plant. It was decided to build more buildings for the water treatment plant. Then the river intake was abandoned and a new groundwater intake system was created. The reservoir functioned uninterruptedly until 1945, when a Soviet bomb fell from the reservoirs on the roof of the main reservoirs. Shortly after the end of hostilities, the reservoirs were rebuilt and again provided water for the city.

Another breakthrough in the history of the sewage treatment plant was the year 2002, when renovation works were started. Then, after the renovation of the buildings, the oldest of them was entered into the register of monuments and a decision was made to create an interactive museum under the management of the municipal water supply. The museum has been operating since 2014. and is constantly developing. It is one of the greatest attractions of Wrocław.

"Blue trams are running on the rails through Wrocław's hundred streets"

wroclaw.wyborcza.pl

Not everyone knows that it is Wrocław that is the first city in Poland to be equipped with electric trams.

The first tram line was not blue at all, but honey-dark green, another difference compared to the current trams is the fact that it was a horse-drawn tram. The inauguration of the line took place on July 10, 1877 and it was a luxurious service that not all residents could afford. She ran from Przedmieście Oławskie to Szczytniki.

The first electric trams – white-green-black – were introduced to the city on June 14, 1893 and served the route from Grabiszyn to Rakowiec and to
Szczytnicki Park.

Wrocław trams during the war.

Due to the fact that most of the military operations bypassed Wrocław and it was a rather safe city, Wrocław’s trams did not stop functioning until March 31, 1945. In the face of increasing damage related to the attack of the Soviet army, it was necessary to suspend the operation of public transport. On April 2, 1945, the Soviet army launched an attack and Wrocław plunged into a sea of fire.
Despite the enormous damage, the Transport Works of the city of Wrocław decided to resume operations on May 10, 1945 under the new Polish management. Many tracks were damaged, as were depots and overhead lines, so a thorough reconstruction was necessary. The first line started on August 22, 1945 and for this reason it was called “Jedynka”, running from Biskupin to Ołbin.

In 1946 most of the main routes were already passable. One of the most important tasks was the reconstruction in 1947 of the ruined Grunwaldzki Bridge.

But back to the title, where are the blue trams?

In 1948, the Recovered Territories Exhibition was held in Wrocław in the Centennial Hall. The event was a motivation for the city to expand the tram network, and the carriages prepared for the event were painted blue.

The color did not last long, because from 1954, at the behest of the Minister of Municipal Economy, all public transport vehicles were painted red. It was only in 1971 that the Provincial National Council decided to restore the blue color, which has remained to this day.

Currently, we have as many as 21 tram lines in Wrocław, and the entire network is one of the oldest and largest in the country with a total length of almost 90 km (approximately 200 km of tracks).

Batogospot Apartments are a great choice for those mobile ones due to the underground garage, as well as for those who appreciate blending in with the big city life. Our location at Ostrów Tumski and Towers is located in the city center and has great access to public transport. Batogospot Apartments will therefore be a great choice for people without a car, but who appreciate the ease of getting around the city.

How to plan your stay – weather in Wroclaw

The weather in Wroclaw is a surprising weather phenomenon. Wrocław is one of the warmest large Polish cities. If you have already decided to go to Wroclaw, it is worth choosing a date that will suit your plans and needs.

In the graph above you can see the average weekly temperature in the city.
The weather in Wroclaw is warmest in July, but before you book a stay in BatogoSpot for July, it is worth noting that it is also the month with the highest rainfall during the month. It may happen that the weather will not be good for our entire stay. The fact is, however, that summer rains are usually intense, but short, so we can always wait out the rain in some pleasant place, which Wroclaw is full of.

June and August are slightly cooler than July, but also less rainy. June is also the sunniest month with the longest days, so in our opinion it is the perfect time to enjoy the city’s nightlife as well.

And for all those who prefer to avoid the holiday crowds and heat, which can be bothersome for some, we recommend May and September. Both are characterized by lower temperatures, but also less rainfall. Hence, a stay in the second half of May or the first half of September can be a bull’s eye.
However, we do not discourage all winter lovers from visiting Wrocław, because the temperatures are usually not so severe and the winter offer of the city satisfies everyone.

Wroclaw has a very large offer of gardens, parks and even forests, which can be a perfect choice on nice days. Below are some of our suggestions.

Pergola with a Multimedia Fountain

It is a very charming place that offers shelter from the sun under a 640-meter long Pergola covered with grapevines.

An additional attraction is the Multimedia Fountain, in the summer you can admire its shows every hour on the hour. The show is different every hour, with different musical styles, so it is necessary to go more than once.
